Studio MDHR’s old-school, hand-animated, 2D side-scroller, Cuphead, has managed to break through the mold and has captured the attention and adoration of the community at large, so much so that the game has managed to sell an impressive 2 million digital units across PC and the Xbox One.

The news about the game’s sales was published just recently over on the The team passionately wrote…

The game has been a hot seller since its release on September 29th, 2017. It launched across Steam, GOG.com and for the Xbox One on the Xbox Store.

While Microsoft hasn’t been keen on revealing what the sales ratios are for the game, we can deduce a rough approximate given that nearly 1.01 million units have been moved on Steam, according to स्टीम स्पाई. We don’t know the sales numbers from GOG.com, but if I had to take a guess it would probably be somewhere between 100k and 200k.

That would mean the Xbox One version sold just shy of 1 million.

It’s an impressive feat given that the game had no sustained marketing campaigns before or after its release. There were just trailers, demos and a whole lot of hype for the game’s 1930’s inspired art-style and ragtime, swinging-jazz soundtrack.

Cuphead also managed to walk away with a few awards during the 2017 Game Awards show.

Of course, Studio MDHR’s side-scroller didn’t achieve success without a little bit of drama. Social Justice Warriors in the media attempted to drum up non-troversies surrounding the game’s art-style, attempting to depict the game as racist.

Thankfully, gamers did not bite the bait and managed to avoid giving the Social Justice Warriors the time of day or attention that they so longingly needed to feel relevant again.

It appears Studio MDHR will continue to bask in the the much-deserved success for the original and fun, side-scrolling platformer.
